A pulley is a device used to change direction and extend the effectiveness of a force in a pulled rope or chain system. The pulley consists of a wheel that has a groove or grooves holding the rope around it. The rope or chain can be suspended in the grooves of the rope holder and pulled over the pulley.
There are several types of pulleys, including:
Fixed pulley: Fixed pulley is a type of pulley that does not move. This is used to change the direction of force effectively. In fixed pulleys, the rope only changes direction and provides no mechanical advantage in lifting the load.
Movable pulley: Movable pulley is a type of pulley that can move freely. It is used to obtain a mechanical advantage by reducing the force required to lift the load. When the rope is pulled over the movable pulley, the load is divided between the several segments of the rope, reducing the load that must be exerted by the user.
Combined pulley: Combined pulley consists of a combination of fixed and movable pulleys. By using a combination pulley, a mechanical advantage can be obtained while changing the direction of the force. Fixed and movable pulleys are combined in one system, resulting in greater mechanical advantage.
Pulleys are used in a variety of applications, including the lifting and lowering of heavy loads, such as in cranes, elevators, lift baskets and goods lifting systems. The working principle of the pulley is based on the basic principles of physics, by changing the direction of the force and obtaining a mechanical advantage in overcoming the load.
